Wow!! I have not seen one of these since I was a little kid!! Yesterday my good friend Teresa sent me an e-mail that last night or early this morning something magical would happen in the sky at 12:30 am well 12:30 came and went and I did'nt see anything, so I decided to check on my computer to see what time the show started. The eclipse started at about 1:50 am and finished up around 3:42 am ( that's what time I ended anyways ) I could barely keep my eyes open lol.A lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow while the moon, sun and Earth are directly aligned.
The Earth's shadow blocks the light that normally reflects off the moon, and the moon visibly dims, as light is bent by the Earth's atmosphere into the shadow.
If there is enough dust in the Earth's atmosphere, the surface will appear blood red. The last total lunar eclipse, sometimes called a blood moon eclipse, seen in New Zealand was in July 2000.
Total eclipses are rare because the sun is usually above or below the plane of the Earth's orbit.
